Chemical Procurement and Storage

  1. Copies of MSDSs that have been received must be provided to the User, to the Chemical Hygiene Officer, and to the Director of Campus Safety.
  2. No container is to be accepted without a proper identifying label.
  3. Storage Areas should be segregated for storage of toxic substances in well-identified areas with adequate ventilation.
  4. Highly toxic chemicals or others whose containers have been opened should be in protective secondary containers or over packs.
  5. Stored containers should be inspected at least annually by the Chemical Hygiene Officer in association with the Campus Safety Department for replacement, deterioration, label integrity, and the container integrity.
  6. Chemicals should be brought to the work areas as needed so as to minimize the quantities of the chemicals stored in individual labs.  Order only what you need and will use during a short period of time.
  7. Storage of chemicals in lab hoods is discouraged.  If it is deemed necessary, then provisions should be made to assure that the storage will not adversely impact the overall performance of the hood.
