Extremely Hazardous Materials

Requirements

  1. The criteria to determine whether a material is Extremely Hazardous are listed in Appendix A.

  2. Department  Chairpersons,  with  input from  the  Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Officer (LCHO), shall determine if a purchased material meets the criteria of being Extremely Hazardous.

  3. Extremely Hazardous Materials, including research chemicals, must have an MSDS available.

  4. A Standard Operating Procedure shall be developed by each laboratory supervisor for the use of an extremely hazardous material in that specific lab. These shall specifically address the use of personal protective equipment, storage requirements, proper disposal of waste, and emergency procedures.

  5. The determination of whether personnel exposure monitoring will be required will be made by the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Officer and, if needed, the Campus Safety Department. These determinations will be made in accordance with any applicable Federal, State and Local statutes.
