LABORATORY PROCEDURES

  1. Before working in the laboratory, you must have attended a Chemistry Safety Lecture in the academic year.

  2. Never work in a Chemical Laboratory by yourself.  Always wear eye protection.  Wear clothing to keep chemicals off skin.

  3. Do not bring food, drink, or food or drink containers into the laboratory.

  4. Wash hands when finished working in the laboratory.  Consider wearing gloves when working with chemicals.

  5. Familiarize yourself with the chemicals and procedures you will be using.

  6. Whenever possible, work in a hood.

  7. Work in a hood when working with volatile materials.  Keep hood sash as low as possible and have hood on.

  8. If you spill any material, confine it to a space so it won’t contaminate other areas.  Do not inhale vapors or dust.

  9. Immediately tell your advisor or another faculty member about spill.

  10. If material gets on you or your clothes, clean well and remove clothing from skin.  Inform advisor about this and complete a safety incident report.

  11. Put all waste chemicals in proper container in hood and replace cap on waste container.

  12. If you bring a chemical into the laboratory, list it on the inventory list with all the required information and place the MSDS in Binder, in alphabetical order.  If there is no MSDS, inform Chemical Safety Officer.

  13. If you remove a chemical from the laboratory, or if you empty a container containing a chemical, indicate this in the inventory/MSDS Binder.

  14. If you cut yourself or have any other incident that affects your health, inform your advisor and the College Science Safety Officer.

  15. Do not pour any chemicals down the drain.

  16. Do not rinse glassware with acetone in a manner that it does down a drain.  Have the rinse acetone go directly into a waste disposal container labeled properly for your use.

  17. In case of fire, don’t inhale the fumes or smoke.  Don’t panic.  Protect yourself first.  Alert others of fire.  If it is confined to a small area, consider use of appropriate fire reduction techniques. If more out-of-control, leave the area and alert Safety and Security at x6911, giving room and origin of fire.
