Minimum Facilities for Laboratories

  1. Air intakes for general ventilation systems should be designed for and located so that clean, fresh, temperature-controlled air is induced into the laboratory.

  2. Chemical stockrooms and storerooms must be well ventilated.

  3. Emergency Eyewash Stations and Drench-type Safety Showers should be located in each lab and remain accessible at all times. This equipment shall be inspected / tested annually.

  4. Each laboratory where hazardous materials are being used should have at least one lab hood for every two workers who routinely require such, and should provide 2.5 linear feet of available unobstructed working space for each worker.

  5. Fume hoods shall be equipped with direct reading manometers.

  6. The minimum face velocity for general use hoods shall be lOO fpm, and for hoods used with highly toxic materials shall be 150-300fpm. Marks should be made on the hoods to indicate the correct sash placement necessary to achieve these airflows. Laboratory Chemical Fume Hoods shall be inspected / tested annually.
