Responsibilities / Accountabilities 

  1. The Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Officer (LCHO) is responsible for the development and annual review of the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan (LCHP).

  2. It is the responsibility of each individual Department Chairperson to  implement the LCHP in each respective area.

  3. Union College will provide adequate facilities, personal protective equipment, materials and training to allow lab work being performed at the College to be done in such a manner as to minimize personnel exposure to hazardous chemicals.

  4. It is the responsibility of each lab supervisor to assure that the requirements of this program are implemented and enforced in his/her respective lab.

  5. Each lab employee must abide by the requirements of the LCHO as well as all other safety rules and regulations in that work area.

  6. Each Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for assuring that experiments/analyses conducted under his/her direction are such that the task does not pose an undue risk to the person actually performing the work.

  7. The Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Officer, in association with the Campus Safety Department, will ensure that training is performed within the required time frame and will be responsible for all record keeping associated with such.

  8. Each area supervisor is responsible for assuring that new employees in his/her area are informed of the location of all emergency equipment, and specific safety roles and requirements of the LCHP for that lab. 

  9. Each area supervisor is responsible for assuring that contact employees working his/her supervision or area of supervision who may be exposed to a hazardous chemical(s) as part of their normal duties are informed of the location of all emergency equipment and specific safety procedures.

  10. It is the responsibility of each laboratory supervisor with input from the LCHO to establish and post all designated areas as required by the LCHP.

  11. Each person on campus who orders chemicals shall assure that an MSDS is on-site before using a chemical and that labels are on all incoming containers are maintained legible.
