Waste Disposal

The College has, for this purpose, a Hazardous Materials Disposal Program. This program is administered through the Campus Safety Department and is available to all departments who generate these types of wastes at no cost.

In order for our campus to fully comply with Federal, State and Local mandates, it is imperative that all potentially hazardous waste materials be disposed of in accordance with and through this program--without exception.

In order to take full advantage of this program, department designees must complete the following:

  1. The amount(s) and type(s) of waste materials must be properly identified.

  2. Waste materials are to be consolidated, packaged and properly labeled according to chemical compatibility.

  3. Contact is then made with the Campus Safety Supervisor (x-8007 or 6911) to advise of the hazardous waste materials present and to schedule a mutually convenient disposal time.

  4. At the predetermined date and time, waste materials are to be transported by the generator department to the Hazardous Waste Storage Facility, which is located adjacent to the Campus Operations Center.

  5. Once the hazardous waste materials are on-site, the prepackaged items are recorded with the assistance of the Campus Safety Supervisor and placed inside of the storage facility.

  6. The packaged hazardous waste materials will then be scored within the waste facility until such time as a recognized hazardous waste removal company completes a subsequent removal.

At no time are inappropriate quantities of hazardous waste materials to be stored at individual department locations or disposed of in an unorthodox manner (such as pouring, quantities of material down a sink drain). Actions such as this not only circumvent our waste disposal program but may also jeopardize the safety of our community members. Additionally, the inappropriate handling of these materials places the College at risk of incurring substantial fines and/or penalties.
