Safety

Radionuclides for disposal may occur in solid, liquid, or gaseous form.  Particular attention must be paid to the physical and chemical properties of these wastes.  It is imperative that the RSO be advised on the chemical, physical, and toxic hazards associated with these wastes as well as the radioactive/radiation properties.

It is extremely important that efforts be made by everyone to maintain the quantity of radioactive wastes to a level as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).

11.01 Procedure for Disposal of Radioactive Wastes

Radionuclides shall be disposed of in containers approved by the RSO.  These containers shall be used only for radioactive wastes and identified by proper labels.

  1. The Requester shall initiate a radiation survey of the radioactive waste by filling out as completely as possible Form 10.1 and forwarding it to the RSO.  (The RSO is available for assistance in completing the form.)

  2. Waste disposal is initiated by the Requester by submitting a form to Union College's Physical Facilities requesting transportation of the radioactive waste to the campus Radioactive Waste Storage Area designated by the RSO.

  3. The Union College Physical Facilities will contact the RSO for a copy of the completed Form 10.1.

    1. All radioactive waste received by Union College's RSO shall be accompanied by the attached Form RWM1 and shall be identified as follows:

      1. Date and Laboratory Origin

      2. Physical form (solid, liquid, etc.)

      3. Quantity as to volume/weight

      4. Radioactive isotopes, quantities, and concentrations

      5. Chemical properties

    2. All liquid radioactive wastes shall be sampled by the "Laboratory of Origin Personnel" and analyzed for H-3, C-14, and any other radionuclides present in the wastes, prior to shipment to the Radioactive Waste Management Area.  The results of the analysis shall accompany the shipment.

    3. Solid radioactive waste received at RWSA shall be in plastic bags only.  No loose trash will be accepted.  These yellow plastic bags will be supplied by the RSO on request and will not exceed 30 gallon capacity.  The Form RWM1 shall be affixed to each bag of trash.
