Union Mini Term Abroad In Martinique - Winter Break
A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE YOUR French while learning about the culture and the history of Martinique, an amazing French and Creole-speaking island in the Caribbean.
The Union College Mini-term in Martinique, designed for French majors, minors, and students who have already participated in the Rennes program, will be scheduled for a three-week period, starting very soon after Thanksgiving and lasting until approximately December 19. (The specific dates will be established later.)
Applicants will be required to take FRN 134 (Studies in the French Caribbean) in the Fall Term of 2005 with Professor Batson, who will lead the mini-term. In Martinique, FRN 135 is offered as a continuation of the on-campus FRN 134, taking Martinique as a point of departure to examine how colonial and postcolonial subjects represent and are represented through literature, theater, and music.
For greater details about what the structure of the Martinique mini-term is, please read the description of the first mini-term, written by Professor Chilcoat. The program in 2005 will be structured similarly.
'(In 2002), students lived with Martinican host families for the duration of the stay; participated in a wide range of seminars in literature (including two given by acclaimed Martinican author Raphaël Confiant), social geography, history and economics, language classes (including an introduction to creole); and went on three major excursions, one to the north of the island, one to the south, and a final exciting jeep tour. They also participated in a guided tour of Fort-de-France, a visit to the Archeological Museum of Martinique, a dance workshop, a visit to the Conseil Régional de Martinique, the Ballets Folkloriques, and a “Contes créoles” storytelling evening. Students then created independent projects in which they incorporated seminar notes, excursion lectures, and individual interviews with the people of Martinique, all of which were supplemented with photos and extensive commentary (all in French).'
