Beinecke Scholarship

Purpose

The Beinecke Scholarship Program was established in 1971 by the Board of Directors of The Sperry and Hutchinson Company to honor Edwin, Frederick, and Walter Beinecke.  The Board created an endowment to provide substantial scholarships for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise.

Amount

Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. 

Length of funding

2 years graduate study.

2. "Junior" standing

3. Plan to enter a master's or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences.

4. United States citizen or a United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

David L. Boren Graduate Fellowship

Purpose

NSEP Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. interests, and  enable U.S. graduate students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add an international dimension to their education.  It is hoped that recipients of Boren Fellowships will comprise an ever-growing cadre of experts whose enriched educational and professional experiences will enable them to provide leadership and direction in our national commitment to economic growth, international peace and security, and the promotion of democracy abroad.

Amount

The maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000. A maximum of $12,000 per semester for up to two semesters ($24,000 total) is available for overseas study. A maximum of $12,000 is available for a program of domestic only study.

2. Either enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university

3. Including a plan for language study in a modern language other than English in your application.

Add. criteria

NSEP Boren Fellowship support may not be used for study of French or Spanish unless such language instruction is at an advanced level or combined with the study of applied science or engineering.

The NSEP service requirement stipulates that an award recipient work in the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, State, or the Intelligence Community. If, after making a full and good faith effort (according to conditions and rules established by NSEP), an award recipient demonstrates to NSEP that no appropriate position is available in one of these agencies, he or she may work in any U.S. federal department or agency. There is also an expectation that NSEP Boren Fellows will use the language or regional expertise acquired as a result of the award in their work for the U.S. government.

NSEP Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). Study of the countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand is excluded.

DAAD Graduate Scholarship for Study/Research in Germany

Purpose

To enhance German Studies at American and Canadian universities and promote international academic relations and cooperation by offering mobility for students.

Amount

Monthly stipends range from € 795 to € 975 depending on the level of academic advancement. DAAD provides each scholarship recipient with a lump sum between € 520 and € 1,022.58, to defray travel expenses. DAAD pays the costs of health, accident and liability insurance with a German insurance company, less € 10.23 per month to be paid by the scholarship holder.

Applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens enrolled full-time in a degree program at an accredited US or Canadian university. Foreign nationals may be able to apply if they have been full-time graduate students at an accredited US or Canadian university for more than one academic year at the time of application.

Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.
