Miscellaneous
What is the official school color?
The beautiful, regal, goes-with-anything garnet. You’ll see garnet paired with black, garnet and gray, garnet and white. Actually, Union’s first color was magenta, chosen in 1866 by a committee of Union undergraduates, but it switched because of a clash with Harvard over its use of magenta (now crimson). The Union garnet was first proudly displayed in a regatta on Saratoga Lake in 1875. We think the color is a gem.
What is the mascot?
We love and support our Dutchmen and Dutchwomen.
What’s the weather like in your part of the world?
We enjoy a change of seasons in Schenectady. The fall is full of warm days, crisp nights and beautiful foliage. Winter brings some snow, which suffuses the campus with a tranquil beauty. Spring bursts onto the scene in mid-April, bringing long, warmer days and inviting many faculty members to hold classes in our outdoor classroom. Typically, summer weather appears around the time of Commencement (mid-June), just as students are completing their work and preparing to head home, although you’ll also find some lingering hot days in early fall.
