Transferring to Union FAQs

When can I transfer to Union, and what are the application deadlines?
Students apply for admission for the fall, winter or spring terms. The application deadline is May 1 for the fall term, Oct. 1 for winter term and Feb. 1 for spring term.

Applying to Union?
To submit a transfer application, complete the Common Application for Transfer Students and the Common Application Transfer Supplement. A completed application includes:

  • official college transcripts
  • official high school transcripts (or an official copy of a G.E.D.)
  • a professor’s recommendation
  • a dean of students’ recommendation
  • an essay
  • a mid-term grade report if you are currently enrolled in courses that will not be completed before the application deadline.  An official final transcript for all course work still must be submitted to us, as soon as it is available.

Is an interview required?
A personal interview, though not required, is strongly recommended. All interviews should be completed at least two weeks before the desired application deadline. On-campus interviews can be scheduled by calling the Admissions Office at (518) 388-6112 or toll-free at (888) 843-6688.

May I reapply if I previously applied as a first year student?
Yes. Submit the Common Application for Transfer Students.

How important are my high school grades and standardized test scores?
Since the transfer process is a competitive one, an applicant’s entire academic history is considered in the admissions process. However, the longer a student has been in college, the less important his or her high school record becomes. Standardized test scores are not required for transfer admissions, but may be submitted. The most important credential is the college transcript.

What makes a successful transfer application at Union?
Successful transfer applicants present a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in at least one year of full-time academic work in courses comparable to those offered at Union College. Consideration is also given to recommendations and personal qualities. In particular, we look for students who can participate enthusiastically and constructively in the life of the College.

Transferring Credits to Union?
Transfer credit decisions are made by the Transfer Coordinators, the Undergraduate Dean and faculty members, who work together to determine which courses will transfer from other institutions. Courses in the liberal arts, sciences and engineering that are roughly comparable to courses taught at Union are usually awarded credit. Credit is not given for courses in which a student has earned a C or lower.

Are there a maximum number of credits I may transfer?
Yes. Union accepts a maximum of two years worth of credit (about 60 credits from a semester school) or the equivalent of 18 Union College courses.

Is financial aid available?
Union offers both merit and need-based financial assistance to new transfer students. If you are applying for financial aid, you must submit financial aid transcripts from previous institutions, the FAFSA and the CSS Profile forms at the same time you apply for admissions.

Is housing available?
Although housing is not guaranteed for transfer students, the Residence Life Office makes every effort to provide on-campus housing for all transfers who request it.
