Meeting Minutes
October 12, 2002

President Robert Danziger '89 called the meeting to order at 9:00 A.M.

The next Alumni Council meeting is scheduled for April 12, 2003.

President Danziger welcomed Council members. He highlighted the positive April 6, 2002 meeting. He asked members who did not attend the meeting to take time to read the minutes. He also highlighted some of the Homecoming activities scheduled after the meeting.

President Danziger asked for new members to introduce themselves. There were eight new members in attendance.

There was a moment of silence for Morris Cohn `24, Willard Hampton `27 and Peter Bishko `63.

The minutes of the April 6, 2002 meeting stand approved as written.

Admissions

Dan Lundquist, Vice President of Admissions and Financial Aid, opened his remarks by highlighting the staffs recruiting effort. Staff will put in nearly 40 total weeks of travel from coast to coast. In addition, alumni have helped generate 516 applications for admissions. Vice President Lundquist handed out the new view book used for recruitment of students.

Annual Fund

John Moses '53, National Chairperson of the Annual Fund, highlighted the success of the 90th Annual Fund.

Moses also shared the impressive numbers with regards to current parents and employees.

College Relations

Tom Gutenberger, Vice President for College Relations, opened his remarks by thanking John Moses `53 for his time, effort and leadership with the Annual Fund. Three new staff members were introduced; George Tiggle `98, Gail Dexter and Sally Webster. Gutenberger went on to stress the importance of friend-raising and how the College has added resources to help with the effort. He announced the completion of the Bailey Field bleachers and the addition of two endowed professorships.

Alumni Relations

Nick Famulare, Director of Alumni Relations, opened his remarks by welcoming everyone back for Homecoming. Turnout for the weekend is terrific and alumni have come from all over the United States. Famulare highlighted the over 60 events held off campus last year with 6,000 plus members of the Union family participating. In addition, he was excited to announce the efforts in club development were beginning to pay off. Union has gone from two active alumni clubs to twelve. He expects another eight to be added over the next year. He thanked the Council for their continuous support.

Standing Committee Reports
Treasurer's Report

Treasurer of the Council, Mike Newell '74, presented the Income and Balance Sheet financial statement for the 2001-2002 budget. Newell shared the 2002-2003 budget which reflected an in- crease in alumni club and young alumni development.

Athletics

Don Bentrovato `69 made a quick athletic update and handed out the Athletic Committee Report. He highlighted the success of Union's 25 NCAA teams which compiled a 192-146-10 record for a .568 win percentage, up six percent from the 2000-01 season. Also, in three years Union has moved from a ranking of 216 to 60th place in the Sear's Directors Cup. Bentovato shared the most recent drawings for the new athletic facilities and encouraged members to attend the Hall of Fame Dinner scheduled for Saturday night.

Feature Speaker - Tom McEvoy, Dean of Residential and Campus Life

Dean McEvoy opened his remarks expressing how excited he is to be at Union. Since his arrival, nearly eight months ago, he has received a warm welcome from the entire Union community. Dean McEvoy's presentation focused on the residential and campus life areas of the College. He highlighted what students can expect in the near future. Below are some of the areas mentioned:

Following Dean McEvoy's presentation questions focused on the student makeup of the new houses, creation of new traditions, locations, housing options for first year students, and cost and funding for the new initiatives.

New Business

Jason Oshins `87, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee, appointed to review the structure and policies of the Alumni Council, provided an update since the last meeting. The Ad Hoc Committee has been busy collecting information from other colleges. Discussion focused on membership size, member's financial obligations, and by-laws of the Council. Oshins will report at the next meeting.

President's Welcome

President Hull welcomed back alumni for Homecoming Weekend. He highlighted the record turnout of alumni back to campus. In addition, he highlighted some of the recent successes of the College since the April 6, 2002 meeting. President Hull introduced Chairman of the Board of Trustees Steve Ciesinski `70.

Board of Trustees Welcome

Chairman Steve Ciesinski `70 extended a warm welcome to alumni. He was excited to announce that Trustee's meetings will take place during Homecoming and ReUnion Weekends. He thanked Karen Huggins `77, Valerie Hoffman, Esq. `75, Mark Webster `88, and Paul Wintrich `60 for their involvement as alumni trustees. Ciesinski highlighted his connection to Union which goes back to his father, Adam Ciesinski `41. He thanked the Council members for their involvement and encouraged all to continue their efforts to strengthen our alma mater.

The meeting was adjourned at noon. The Alma Mater was sung.
