Eliphalet Nott was president of Union College from 1804 until 1866, a sixty-two year tenure that remains the record for college presidencies in the U.S. Nott was also an inventor, a businessman, and an entrepreneur. It is in the entrepreneurial spirit of Nott, therefore, that the Eliphalet Nott Society was founded in 1992 at Union.
The society offers alumni of the College who are entrepreneurs opportunities to lend professional support to other enterprising alumni, to learn from other experienced alumni, and to support the College.
Members of the society pledge a minimum of two percent of their equity in an enterprise in which they are founder, principal, lender, or investor. At the time their company goes public or is sold, they contribute the portion of their stock that was pledged to the College as a gift.
The members meet in New York City (there currently are 26) and other interested alumni meet semi-annually to share experiences, trade information, discuss investments and start-up companies, and learn of new opportunities in business practices. The meetings bring together younger alums just getting companies started with more experienced alums who have already succeeded in maintaining and managing new companies.
Any alumnus of the College is invited to attend the meetings and request being added to the society's mailing list in order to receive agendas and minutes of the meetings.
