American Sycamore

Platanus occidentalis

Height: 60-100 ft.
Diameter: 2-4 ft.

Range: From Maine to Northern Florida to Texas, up to Nebraska.

Campus Location: Lower lot

Description: Sycamore is one of the largest eastern hardwoods with large spreading branches forming a broad open crown. They are commonly found in the wet soils of streambeds, lakes, and swamps. Sycamores are also a pioneer species and can often be found on old fields and abandoned strip mines. A few large Sycamores grace the northwestern corner of the Union College campus. Unfortunately, these trees are plagued with anthracnose, although the two remaining trees seem to be doing well with injections for the disease. One of the hollowed trunks is home to some of the college’s many squirrels.
