Notice of Construction Events (scroll down for past entries):
  • October 5, 2009.  Here is the most recent 3-month construction schedule:
    3_month
  • September 13, 2009.  Next weekend (Sept. 18-20) chilled water (= air conditioning) for Olin, Social Sciences, Humanities and Schaffer Library will be inturrupted while new chilled water lines are installed.
Current activities: Pre-cast concrete tunnels are being installed that will carry utilities under the Wold building.  These tunnels will be completed the week of Sept. 14, and new steam lines will be complete by early October so that heat can be turned on when needed.  Foundation work on the Wold building will begin soon, and steel will begin to rise before the end of Fall term.
Time-lapse movies of the construction so far are posted on YouTube.  Click on "WoldCam" for links to the movies.
  • July 10, 2009.  Notice of upcoming interruptions in electrical, computer network and phone services caused by the construction of the Wold Building.  Within the next few weeks cables that have provided these services to parts of the Union campus but that run through the construction site will be disconnected and replaced by new cables, currently being installed, that avoid the site.  This is being done to make way for the excavation of the foundation of the Wold Building later this summer.

The dates that have been set aside for the switchover were chosen to minimize the inconvenience to faculty, staff and students while at the same time being sensitive to the construction schedule.  To the extent that we do cause inconvenience, we apologize.  The interruptions will occur at the following times:

    Electrical Interruption:

  • June 18, 2009.  The architects from EYP will be on campus next Tuesday and Wednesday (June 23-24) to review the construction documents for the Wold Center.
Meanwhile, work on the site preparation is progressing very well:
  • most of the demolition of the “hard-scape” (sidewalks and stairs) is complete
  • the water line through the site has been cut and capped (without service interruption)
  • the steam line through the site has been cut and capped.
In the coming weeks:
  • the chilled water line will be re-routed; this will mean a 1-2 day interruption of air conditioning in Olin, S&E, Social Sciences and the Library toward the end of the week of June 22 or the following week
  • new electric service for Olin and Wold will be installed in two steps, each of which will require a 1-2 day power outage in Olin.  The first is likely to occur the week of July 13.  Exact dates will be announced as soon as they are set.
  • The relocation of the electrical and gas lines for Olin and Wold will require closing of the outside doors and walkway between Olin and Science and Engineering.  The tunnel will remain open, and the outdoor path will be re-opened when the utilities work is complete.  Again, exact dates will be announced when they are known.
Later in the summer
  • telecom and data service will be switched to new lines, requiring some down-time.
  • June 8, 2009. Construction fence will be erected starting today.  See map below.
Construction activities are expected to be daily from 7am to 4pm.  Level of vibration may vary from day to day.  Weather will also affect amount of activity.  The next few days (June --12) should involve some hammering of concrete which would be one of the more vibration creating activities.  This work will be performed early in the day to avoid disrupting any exams.
  • June 2, 2009. Early this morning (~4AM) power was shut off in Olin for measurements on the transformer supplying electricity to the building, in preparation for installing new electric service for Olin and Wold.
  • June 1, 2009. Utility relocation work began today.  While some trees and shrubs will be removed to make way for construction, rest asured that new sustainable landscaping consistent with the rest of campus is part of the project.
  • May 1, 2009. Here is the map of the construction site.  Brown shaded area will be fenced off for construction.
The tunnel from Olin to S&E will be open.  The red paths are temporary routes that will be open during construction.

  • April 27, 2009. WoldCam is up and running.  Click the link at the left to watch the site real time.
  • Major utilities relocation efforts will begin in May, 2009.  Watch here for more details.
  • Weeks of March 23 and 30, 2009: Drilling test GSHP well off the corner of S&E (noise; walkways closed)
  • Week of February 16, 2009: Hydrovac exploration of building site to locate buried utilities (noise; walkways closed)
