Parent's Guide
We have prepared this information page to highlight for you some of the services and resources of the Becker Career Center.
The Union College Career Center's mission is to provide quality career services to assist students and alumni in developing and fulfilling their career objectives. Students can use the Center at any point in their careers and are strongly encouraged to come in during their first year.
Additionally, this information page outlines areas where you, as a parent, may be able to help the Career Center achieve its goals of assisting students and alumni. You are welcome to visit our Center at any time. By participating as an employer in on-campus recruiting, resume referral, posting internships, or listing job opportunities, you join a tradition begun by parents before you.
Experienced advisors are prepared to assist in helping your son or daughter develop a more informed and systematic approach to his/her career development. We look forward to seeing your student at the Center!
Programs and Services
Career Advising
Professional staff members are available by appointment to assist your son or daughter with all aspects of the career development process, from self-assessment and career exploration to the job/graduate school search. Students may call the Center at (518) 388-6176 to schedule an appointment.
Self-Assessment
The Career Center uses the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and the Interest & Skills checklist to help students assess their interests, skills, and preferences and explore related careers. Your son or daughter may contact the Center to set up a time to talk with a Career Advisor about this option.
Registration
All students are strongly encouraged to fill out the Career Center Profile through eRecruiting. This will enable them to receive information by e-mail about programs and opportunities relevant to their interests.
Internships
Relevant work experience is an important aspect of a student's career preparation. Union students may participate in departmental internships for credit or the career advisors can advise them about finding summer and non-credit opportunities. The Center works with 25 select colleges in maintaining an extensive international internship database of over 26,000 entries, accessible through our web site.
Union Career Advisory Network
Networking is an important skill to use in one's job search. Union is fortunate to have over 1400 alumni representing 16 major career fields nationwide who have volunteered to serve as Alumni Career Advisors to students and alumni. This list is available on-line through eRecruiting.
Alumni Listings
The entire alumni pool is available for student access at the Center. Alumni are cross-referenced by last name, employer, geographic location, major and vocation. Students may contact them for information and advice.
Interviewing and Mock Interviews
Video-taped practice interviews are available by appointment after a student has attended an interviewing workshop. Analysis and feed-back enable students to sharpen their interviewing skills.
Recruiting
Employers visit campus to give company information sessions, accept resumes, and interview students throughout the year for internships and full-time positions.
Employer Literature
Annual reports, company videos, articles, web sites and other employer literature is readily available for alumni and student use.
