East Asian Studies 2007-2008

Overview
This major provides a broad interdisciplinary liberal arts education focusing on the language and culture of East Asia (with emphasis on China and Japan). It leads to the degree of bachelor of arts and is designed primarily for those seeking careers in business, government service, law, journalism or teaching, and for those intending to enter graduate school.
The major consists of 14 courses distributed as follows:
(A) Two courses from:
History 181: East Asian Tradition
History 182: Modern East Asia
Modern Literature in Translation 204: Tracing Literary Tradition in China and Japan
Modern Literature in Translation 205: Chinese and Japanese Literature in the Modern Era
(B) Five courses in Chinese or Japanese language.
(C) Five courses related to East Asia from any department in the College.
(D) Two courses devoted to a senior project. In addition, majors must pass a comprehensive examination in the form of an oral defense of their senior project.
(E) Students are encouraged to apply for the Terms Abroad in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.
