Vietnam 1Union Term Abroad in Hanoi, Vietnam - Fall 2009

This is a cooperative program with Hobart & William Smith Colleges through the Partnership for Global Education (PGE).

Course of Study

Vietnamese Language (Two Credits) - taught by local faculty from the Vietnamese Language School  (VLS) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the Facuty of Vietnamese Language and Culture, the Vietnam National University of Hanoi.

Vietnamese Culture and Civilization - a series of seminars and lectures in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi by local faculty and experts on many facets of Vietnamese life and culture.

Directed Field Work -supervised by the resident faculty member and the DirectVietnam 2or of CET Vietnam. 

Director's Seminar: - seminar topic chosen by the resident faculty member.

The Vietnam term gives five course credits.

Eligibility

This program is open to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and can accommodate students from a variety of academic fields. Students must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 at the time of application, be in good academic standing when the program begins, and be certified as eligible by the Dean of Students. Students must submit a strong personal statement that outlines clearly why participation Vietnam 3in the program would help to fulfill academic and personal goals.

Expenses

Estimated Expenses Beyond Current Term Abroad Fee:

  • $1,400 RT airfare from Upstate NY
  • 600 Books and materials
  • 1,250 Misc./personal (laundry, travel, etc.)

Miscellaneous

Excursions: Study tours and excursions are an important part of the program. Excursions to various cultural and historical sites near Hanoi, including Halong Bay, the Chinese border region, and Mai Chau/Hoa Binh, are planned. Excursions from Ho Chi Minh City include the Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi Tunnels. In addition, a ten-day central region study tour will visit cities such as Dalat, Nha Trang, Hoi An, Danang, and Hue.

Accommodations: Students are housed in double rooms of dormitory units with private bath arranged by CET Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City, and Vietnam National University in Hanoi.
