Union College Mini Term in Argentina- Winter Break

The Women’s and Gender Studies’ Program invites you to spend three weeks in Buenos Aires, at the beginning of Argentina’s summer. The mini-term is open to students of all majors. One of the most politically exciting cities in the world today, Buenos Aires is alive with opportunities to study women, gender, history, politics and culture. Not only is Buenos Aires made famous by Eva Peron, it is well-known as a center of the arts, of dance (tango), film, music, and sports.

Buenos Aires is the home of a famous human rights’ campaign initiated and entirely led by women: “The Mothers (Madres) of the Plaza de Mayo”. We will visit with the Madres and share in their campaign to learn the fate of their children and grandchildren who disappeared during the military dictatorship of the 1970s and early 1980s. We will meet with women leading trade unions, working to better living standards, and with men and women pursuing gender equality. Gay and lesbian politics are hotly debated and Buenos Aires is the only Latin American city that has legal same-sex marriages.

Classes at the Universidad de Palermo, taught in English by leading Argentine experts in women, politics, history and gender studies, will be supplemented by daily tours and work experience in local communities, with human rights activists, visits to museums and historic neighborhoods.

Requirements: Demonstrated interest in women and gender studies, as indicated in having completed, or planning to complete, one or more of the following: Perspectives on Women & Gender; Latin American Cinema; History of Latin American Women; Reform and Revolution in LA; Women in Cross-Cultural Perspective; Feminist Film; or Voices of Hispanic Women. Students may also state their interest in the essay/application and be admitted with permission of the instructor. Spanish is not required, although it is recommended that students have some working knowledge of it, acquired in classes or in self-study. Students will also be required to participate in a number of fall orientation meetings before leaving on the term in late November. Housing in Buenos Aires will be with families. The program is limited to 16. The mini-term earns credit as a women and gender studies course, GenEd: CDLA.
