Union Mini Term Abroad In China - Summer Break
The goals of the mini-term are three fold. One, it is hoped that by studying at the host college on some of the practices of Chinese traditional medicine, students will have a basic understanding of TCM practice in China for the past thousands of years. Two, by comparing some of the practices of TCM and Western medicine, students will have a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of these medicines and hopefully some insight will be gained on both. Three, by traveling, students will gain some knowledge of Chinese culture and meet its people.
Typical morning starts at 8:30 with Taiji exercise class. Then it moves to acupuncture and Tuina massage technique classes. Theories of TCM will be taught in two afternoons. Most afternoons (2-3:30) will be reserved for clinical observation and special seminar on topics of students’ interests. On weekend we will be traveling to places of importance such as Beijing (the capital of China, 75 miles northeast of host college), a Buddhist mountain, a Daoist mountain, and maybe a rural village.
The mini-term counts toward one course credit. It could be EAS or GenEd. IV/culture diversity. It costs one course ($3,000) in tuition. This amount will cover tuition, room and board, and organized travel within China. You need to buy your round trip airfare from U.S. to Beijing, China ($850 & up). You need to pay for your visa to enter China ($50). Lastly, you probably need spending money for gifts, etc.
You will have a single room (unless you request a double room for two) at the host college in Tianjin (the 4th largest city in China, 75 miles southeast of Beijing). It has a shower, toilet, and air-condition. Beddings will be provided and changed on a weekly basis. The building/hotel is reserved for foreign students and other guests. There is a restaurant on the first floor, where you can eat or you can go out to find your own food. There are a lot of eateries and restaurants around. You food money for the whole trip will be given to you as soon as we get there.
