The Concordiensis
The Concordiensis, the primary student newspaper of Union College, was established in 1877. It is the thirteenth oldest student newspaper in the United States and the oldest continually published newspaper in Schenectady, New York. According to Wayne Somers’ Encyclopedia of Union College History (2003), its name was suggested by a member of the Class of 1879 and comes from a Latin adjective meaning "of or pertaining to union." Edited and written almost entirely by students, the Concordiensis has featured a wide and varying range of content over the years, including: literary works and College humor; reviews; editorials; sports stories; general College, Union University, and alumni news; selected national and international news; engravings, photographs, and, of course, numerous advertisements for events and products of interest to Union students. A project to digitize and make searchable all issues of the newspaper has begun with those from its first decade (1877-1888) as well as those published during the beginning of its third century (2000-2008). The entire run of the Concordiensis is also available on microfilm in Schaffer Library.
