To use Google most effectively, it is essential that you search from the Advanced Search screen. Doing this will help you limit your results and increase their relevance to your search topic. Make the following settings for your first attempt at locating substantive and current web sites:

Language: English
Date: Past Year
Occurrences: Title


For example, if you were searching for web sites on the Ottoman Empire, this is how you might start: see below:



On the other hand, if you were searching for web sites on the Byzantine Empire, you might broaden the search to include both “Byzantine Empire” and “Byzantium”, like this:

If you find very little or nothing using these search parameters, drop the restriction on Date. If that fails to produce better results, drop the restriction on Occurrences as well.
