Profs. Carroll, Werner talk on research with undergrads

Mary Carroll, associate professor of chemistry, and Tom Werner, Florence B. Sherwood Professor of Physical Sciences, gave talks at a session titled "Forensic Chemistry, Toxicology and Forensic Biology" at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society. Prof. Carroll presented "Two forensic chemistry experiments: Density and drug analysis," about her GenEd course, "Topics in Chemical Analysis: Forensic Chemistry." Her co-authors were two Union students, Lisa Saccocio (MAT '03) and Shira Mandel '05. Prof. Werner spoke on "Identification of controlled substances by CE: An undergraduate research project between Union College and the New York State Forensics Center." The five-year research collaboration has resulted in six senior theses and the development of methods for the identification of d-propoxyphene, l-methorphan and LSD, all of which are controlled substances, according to the DEA.
