The talk, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the College's Language Center, Department of Modern Languages and Literature, the Center for Converging Technology and Information Technology Services.

Before the talk, the College will host a free lunch for members of the campus community. If you are interested in joining Gaugler at 12:30 in Reamer Campus Center Room 410, please RSVP Audrey Sartiaux at sartiaua@union.edu or call 388-6216 by April 10.

Gaugler will discuss the need for a new curricular model of language instruction that integrates media literacy. In addition, he will present a task-based course successfully taught for the past five years at the undergraduate level that prepares language students for the kind of electronic communication they will encounter in the workplace.

At Marist, Gaugler worked on a FIPSE grant to create a course that develops media literacy skills and Spanish language skills simultaneously. He has presented his pedagogical innovations at numerous conferences and colleges in the United States.

Gaugler received his Bachelor's degree in Spanish and German from Assumption College and was valedictorian of his class in 1994.  He went on to earn a Master's degree in 1996 and a Ph.D. in Spanish literature and film both from the University of Connecticut in 2000. He has been teaching Spanish language, literature, culture and film at Marist College for the past six years and is the author of several articles on post-Francoist cinema and literature.
