"Songs of Hope" part of Daniel Pearl World Music Days
Shannon Spicciati, Janeanne Houston and Paul Richard Olson perform musical selections from Hilary Tann and others Sunday. |
Union’s Department of Music presents “Songs of Hope,” a concert inspired by the events of 9/11, on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Fred L. Emerson Foundation Auditorium in the Taylor Music Center.
The concert is timed to coincide with the Daniel Pearl World Music Days, an international network of “Harmony for Humanity” concerts using the power of music to reaffirm a commitment to tolerance.
A mountain bluebird on Naches Pass in King County, Wash., represents the "Songs of Hope." One of the songs, by composer Carol Sams, is a setting of the Emily Dickinson poem "Hope is the thing with feathers." |
The contemporary program showcases new compositions by Hilary Tann, the John Payne Professor of Music, performed by acclaimed Seattle-based soprano Janeanne Houston with oboist Shannon Spicciati and pianist Paul Richard Olson.
The songs to be performed are settings of poetry by American poets e.e. cummings, Sara Teasdale and Emily Dickinson, and Welsh poet Menna Elfyn.
Selections include the world premiere of the song cycle, “Cummings’ Suite,” by North Carolina composer Dan Locklair; the New York premiere of “Songs of the Cotton Grass” by Tann for soprano and oboe; the world premiere of songs by Northwest composer Carol Sams, including “The Soul that you Have Given Me and O God is Pure,” and songs by Simon Sargon and Lori Laitman featured on earlier Houston recordings.
Tann’s works have been performed at numerous festivals by such groups as the Women’s Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and KBS Philharmonic in Seoul Korea.
Locklair’s music is performed throughout the United States, Canada and abroad. His prolific output includes symphonic works, a ballet, an opera and numerous solo, chamber, vocal and choral compositions.
Tickets, free to the Union College community, are available in advance or at the door. Admission for the general public is $8; for area students and UCALL members, $3.
