Watson Fellowship finalists announced
Combining passions across disciplines, from philosophy and theater to engineering, medicine and music, Union’s four Watson Fellowship nominees have proposed travel-study topics that span the globe and their creative interests.
Robbie Flick '08 plans to combine his love of photography and humanitarianism in a project called “Perspectives on Global Poverty and Starvation.”
Joey Hunziker '08 has proposed “Speak Up: Finding a Voice and Connection through Theater,” which would allow him to pursue his passion for movement-based theater in Mexico, Italy, Brazil and Japan.
Andrew Krauss '08, a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Philosophy, seeks to travel to New Zealand and the South Pacific for his project, “In Pursuit of Speed: Evolution in Outrigger Canoeing.”
Andy Laccetti '08 has blended his love for medicine and music in his proposed exploration of music therapy in Argentina, Brazil, China and India, titled “Hear the Healing: A Cross-Cultural Exploration of Music Therapy and Its Implementation in Four Countries.”
“We are very excited about the potential of these projects, and the nominees will all be working extremely hard in the next month to enhance their proposals,” said History Professor Joyce Madancy, a member of the College's Watson Fellowship Committee. She urges faculty to congratulate all of the students who applied. “The application process and interview are grueling and time consuming. We are proud of them for giving it their best shot.”
Other committee members include Director of Postgraduate Fellowships Maggie Tongue, Ann Anderson (Mechanical Engineering), Charles Batson (French), David Ogawa (Visual Arts) and John Zumbrunnen (Political Science).
