Slovenian pianist to perform varied program tonight
Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tomsic, who gave her first public recital at 5, has steadily established herself as one of the world’s most sought after concert artists. Tomsic will perform at Memorial Chapel Wednesday, April 16, 8 p.m. as part of the Union Chamber Concert Series.
The program will include works by Mozart (Adagio in b, K. 540); D. Scarlatti (Four Sonatas); Beethoven (Appasionata Sonata, Op. 57); Brahms (Selections from Op. 118 & 119); Alojz Srebotnjak (Macedonain Dances); and Prokofiev (Sonata No. 3 in a, Op. 28).

As part of her annual U.S. tour, Tomsic also will perform at the Celebrity Series in Boston, San Francisco Performances, Master Pianists Series in Kansas City, Gilmore Festival and Middlebury College, Vt. She will make her debut with the Honolulu Symphony.
Tomsic studied at the Ljubljana Academy in Slovenia and the Julliard School of Music in New York. She was the only protégé of legendary pianist Arthur Rubinstein, who considered her “a perfect and marvelous pianist.”
She has given recitals to great critical acclaim in on leading stages and with the major symphony orchestras across the globe. Gramophone Magazine noted that she enjoys “something of a cult status among pianophiles.”
The Los Angeles Times said Tomsic’s performances convey “heroic power and Olympian vision.” The Boston Globe has cited her “splendor, drama, passion, poetry and subtlety.”
And The Boston Phoenix wrote, “She is simply one of the greatest musicians alive, and everything she does is on the highest level of virtuosity and insight.”
Tomsic has performed more than 4,000 concerts on five continents. She has served as juror for many international piano competitions, including the Van Cliburn, Leeds and Beethoven competitions. A major recording artist, she has had more than 80 CDs released since 1987.
Tomsic makes her home in Ljubljana and is a professor at the Ljubljana University Academy of Music.
