UNITAS Fund Reaches $40 K; Celebration Slated for Sunday

UNITAS, an endowment fund begun by retiring professors Twitty Styles and Carl George to support diversity programs, had this week grown to $40,000.

Styles and George, who retire this year from the biology department after 62 years of combined service, each have given $5,000. Another $10,000 was raised from members and friends of the Union community. President Roger Hull pledged that the College would match the total sum.

"We want to leave an enduring memorial at Union College," they said in a letter to the community. The endowment is to support programs in the arts, guest speakers, conferences and library development.

The two have opted out of a retirement dinner. Instead, they will launch UNITAS in "A Celebration of Transition" on Sunday, June 1, at 1:30 p.m. in the Nott Memorial. The afternoon will include music, festivities, and a celebration of diversity.
