Boathouse Construction Could Start in July

Work on a College Boathouse in the Stockade could begin in July, according to Joseph Mammola, vice president for public affairs.

The city Zoning Board of Appeals has set a hearing for July 2 on Union's application for a special use permit. The site, on the west side of Front Street adjacent to a city pool and Riverside Park, is now zoned as open space for parks and recreation. The project also requires permits from the state and from the Army Corps of Engineers, Mammola noted.

"We are proceeding as expeditiously as possible to have the boathouse under construction in July," he said. The $400,000 structure, which is to measure 60 by 80 feet, could be completed this fall, when the men's and women's crew programs become varsity sports.

President Roger Hull and Schenectady Mayor Albert Jurczynski last week announced an agreement on the project.
