Novelist Alvarez to Speak on 'Making Of A Writer'
Novelist Julia Alvarez will talk on "The Making of a Writer" on Wednesday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Nott Memorial.
Alvarez's award-winning novels How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of Butterflies, and Yo!, as well as her poetry, have helped to give a distinct voice to Latina women. A native of the Dominican Republic, Alvarez highlights the struggles between ties to the homeland and desires to establish a new American identity; she broaches the threshold between accent and native speech, alienation and assimilation, history and politics.
Her appearance is sponsored by the Minerva Committee with support from Circulo Estudiantil Latino Americano, the English department, History department, and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies programs.
