Campus Safety Issues Advisory
Campus Safety officers are reminding members of the campus community about safety tips in the wake of an incident last weekend in which a victim was assaulted while walking toward campus from a residence in College Park. There were no serious injuries.
Although the Campus Safety patrols the College Park neighborhood on foot and by vehicle, it is important to remember that an academic community does not exist in a vacuum, reads a warning to the campus.
The office advises:
1. Be alert to your surroundings and stay in well-lighted areas. Walk with friends.
2. Walk confidently, assertively, eyes looking around. An attacker looks for someone who appears vulnerable and passive.
3. Wear clothes and shoes that give freedom of movement.
4. Be careful when people stop you for directions or help, a tactic often used to put you in a vulnerable position.
5. Tell someone where you are going and when you will return.
6. Have your key in hand and ready to unlock your door.
7. Always keep your door locked.
8. There are 39 emergency telephones located all across campus and in the College Park neighborhood. Make a point of knowing where they are located.
