Warm welcome, crisp fall weather for 500 visitors
A warm welcome and a stunning fall day apparently made an impression with hundreds of prospectives and their families at Monday's admissions open house.
A group of visitors at the Admissions open house, held on Oct. 13, 2003, pause to discuss the college's historical significance. |
There were an estimated 500 visitors on campus, according to Lilia Tiemann, coordinator of alumni admissions and event planning. More than 100 students who attended the Multicultural Weekend before Monday's open house.
One prospective student, after a personal tour from Prof. Ann Anderson of mechanical engineering, wrote: "I realized that Union's style of combining engineering with a liberal arts environment is the sort of education that will benefit me most. I am going to apply for early decision to Union because I liked it so much."
One parent from Massachusetts voiced a common theme on Monday: "There is a unique feeling about Union which comes across initially when reading admissions materials and continues to be present when visiting the school and most of all by knowing students who attend Union. It seems to me that you go the extra mile in trying to get to really find out who your applicants are. You are doing something that feels very right."
Said Dan Lundquist, vice president for admissions, "Among our visitors, there seems to be a presumption of excellence - that we are one great college in a group of great colleges - and as they strive to differentiate one from another the 'unique feeling' things that they pick up from students and faculty are cited time and time again as motivating positives."
Recently heard in Grant Hall from two prospective students struggling with the coffee machine: "Maybe this is part of the admissions process."
