Visitors to a web site launched this week on the College's Residential House System will find a site that is full of information on the concept, timeline and details of the initiative that will create seven residential buildings on campus.

But members of the House System Implementation Committee want every visitor to pay special attention to the "Feedback" section.

"It is important for (the Implementation Committee) to hear the questions, reactions, comments, suggestions, criticisms, and compliments," said Tom McEvoy, dean of residential and campus life and chair of the committee. "We want to get the pulse of the community, and this web site will help us take our cues from the community."

The site is at: http://www.union.edu/HouseSystem

"The House System is never going to work if we just flip a switch and say, 'Here it is,'" McEvoy said. "We need to bring everyone along. This began as an idea that has been built upon by people coming together to address the details."

The 19-member committee will include seven students to be named shortly, McEvoy said, adding, "We have some vocal and imaginative candidates." Faculty and staff members besides McEvoy are Julius Barbanel, professor of mathematics; Doug Bazuin, director of residential life; Suzanne Benack, professor of psychology; Barbara Danowski, associate professor of biology; Hugh Jenkins, associate professor of English; Brenda Johnson, associate professor of mathematics; Therese McCarty, professor of economics; Matthew Milless, director of student activities; Byron Nichols, professor of political science; William Scanlon, senior assistant director of athletics; and Alan Taylor, Mary Louise Bailey Professor of Mathematics.

The planning and implementation of the House System is being supported by a grant of $200,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
