FIJI TERM ABROAD
Fiji Photo Gallery
Every other year, most recently in winter 2003, the department offers a term abroad in Fiji. The program is run by professors Brison and Leavitt. Students learn the basics of anthropological research in an actual field setting. Each student lives in a different village, with a Fijian host family. Contact with other students is limited outside of weekly class meetings. Fiji, as a developing Pacific Island country, offers a strong local cultural setting while at the same time giving ample material on topics of development and globalization. A midterm break includes the chance to learn scuba-diving.
Fiji: A Digital Ethnography
(winter 2003). The web site for the winter 2003 Fiji Term Abroad, designed by John Thompson '03, uses the latest technologies to bring the ethnographic experience to the web. The site features photos and commentary by Fijian students at Nakauvadra High School in Rakiraki. It also records photos, notes, and commentary by the ten Union term abroad students. Bulletin boards allow communication with Introducotry Anthropology students, parents and friends, and high school students on both sides of the globe.
Fiji Interactive Web Site
(fall 1999). The web site for the fall 1999 Fiji Term Abroad offers final papers, photos, assignments, email surrounding the 2000 coup, email with Introductory Anthropology students and more.
