AVA140: 3D DESIGN 1

Description

Three Dimensional Design 1 is an introduction to basic concepts and techniques of ordering and organizing materials, space, and structure. Students work in various media including paper, foamcore, plaster, and wood. Class projects move from a plaster cast low relief to fully three dimensional table top structures and large scale free standing projects. Linkages between form, function, and possible meanings of the built environment are drawn.

The final project is a scale model proposal for a contemporary monument, to be sited on the Union campus. This assignment aims to include imaginative, visual and practical possibilities. It allows for metaphorical, social and political considerations, too, as we think about the nature of symbolic structures along with potential uses and the actual "look".
