Marcelo Novo interviewed by Adrienne Klein
What is automatism?
"I was introduced to automatism by my teacher and mentor, the Argentine surrealist painter Roberto Aizenberg. Automatism is recording images that flow from the subconscious, a method of creation that gives the artist unlimited creative freedom. When I start I never know what will manifest itself. I start by doodling with a pen or brush. When I feel as though things are happening, I follow. I also work in color, but this body of work is in black and white which helps remove it from this reality and opens the images to interpretation. I am not interested in communicating a precise message. I like for people to look at the work and find their own reflections."
You layer ink, spray paint, charcoal, and acrylics. This is an unconventional mix.
"I utilize whatever medium is necessary in order to obtain a pure and most faithful translation. Whatever is in my mind has to go through my arm, my hand; I have to be able to transfer that information. A painting will never be exactly the same as in my imagination. It's like I'm trying to capture something that is flowing. So I try to avoid interference by choosing materials that let me work quickly. I finish work in one session; I don't go back and re-work it."
The fact that you value spontaneity and the unconscious places you outside of this culture and locates you inside two others: Latin America, with its literary "magic realism" and the practice of Buddhism.
"I grew up in Buenos Aires. There are some symbols closely related to Latin America that recur in my paintings. In my practice of Buddhism we believe that at any one moment you are in a particular state. I try to capture that momentary state. And I don't use automatism only in my paintings. I act that way in my daily life! I am very spontaneous. I say what is on my mind. I speak freely. In the beginning I had to make an effort to open the door. After working at this for so many years, now the door opens by itself."
