Topic Assignment

The first assignment for your econometrics paper is due Monday September 15th at the start of class. (As the deadlines handout says, speak to me before the deadline if you need an extension – there is a late penalty if you hand it in late without doing so). The first assignment is to describe the topic you want to write about. In a paragraph or two (not more than one page) explain three things:

1)      What is the topic you want to write about?

2)      What is interesting about that topic to economists?

3)      What economic relationship do you wish to study?

An economic relationship involves two or more variables that have some connection in economic theory. Use a graph or figure to describe the economic relationship if you can.

An economic topic might be, for example, the tradeoff between unemployment and inflation, which is interesting because unemployment and inflation are possible targets for monetary and fiscal policy. The economic relationship between them is the Phillips curve:

I will make comments on your topic statements and return them to you later in the week or early the next week.
