For English majors, the program begins with two gateway courses: Introduction to Literary Studies. These courses introduce the basic skills every English major needs. The student then moves on to intermediate coursework, which falls into four categories: Historical Studies, Genre Studies, Author Studies, and Cultural Studies. Advanced students take three seminars, two Junior and one Senior. The seminars in both categories are writing intensive, typically research oriented, and organized around the work of particular authors or topics.

Requirements for the Major

Twelve courses, including two gateway courses, Introduction to Literary Studies: Fiction and Poetry (100 and 101); seven intermediate courses (200-level) including at least one course on Shakespeare (223 or 224), one pre-1700 course in Literature in Historical Context (203-208) and one pre-1900 course in Literature in Historical Context (209-216); and three seminars: two junior seminars (300-level) and one senior seminar (400-level).

Students must take at least one Introductory Course before enrolling in an Intermediate Course. Students must take at least two Intermediate Courses before enrolling in a Junior Seminar. Students must take at least four Intermediate Courses before enrolling in a Senior Seminar.



Requirements for Honors

14 courses are required for Honors, the twelve courses outlined above and a two-term Honors Thesis Seminar. In this seminar, students are expected to learn research methods, discuss their subjects and approaches to them, share ideas and writing, as they work toward completing their individual theses under the direction of the seminar instructor.

Honors students are also required to take the Literary Theory Seminar as one of their intermediate requirements.

In addition to the requirements listed above, students must maintain a 3.3 GPA both within the major and overall, submit an honors thesis, take an oral examination involving defense of the thesis, and gain the approval of their thesis by the Honors Examining Committee.

Requirements for Interdepartmental Majors

All proposals for interdepartmental majors involving English must be approved by the department; the student should consult the department chair.

English I.D. Majors have a 7 course requirement, which includes one Introductory Course, and six others, with at least one Historical Studies Course, pre-1700 (203-208), and Shakespeare (223 or 224).

Students seeking I.D. Honors in English have a 9 course requirement, the additional two beyond the requirements for the English I.D. Major being the two-term thesis seminar.



Requirements for the Minor

English Minors have a 7 course requirement, which includes one Introductory Course (100 or 101), and six others, with at least one Historical Studies Course, pre-1700 (203-208), and Shakespeare (223 or 224).



Requirements for Secondary School Certification

Students must complete Psy 50, Soc 52, EdS 10, EdS 20, Psy 240, EdS 211, EdS 180, and EdS 190. Requirements within the English Department are identical to those of the English major with one exception -- the student must either complete one writing course or serve for at least one term as a tutor in the Writing Center. Students must become members of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) for the academic year preceding the Curriculum and Methods course (EDS 211). NCTE student membership applications are available in the Educational Studies Program office.
