The oceans cover more than 70% of our planet to an average depth of 4km. Though the sea provides us with recreation, food, and transportation, it also has a strong influence on weather and climate, and presents ever-present hazards to human society. This course is an introduction to the geology of the ocean basins, the characteristics of ocean water, the creatures that live in the oceans, marine hazards, and the relationship between the oceans, human activities, and climate change.
