Note: A satiric view of Democratic party politics following the U.S. Civil War. Written in the form of essays by a postmaster and professor of "Biblical Politics" [spelling corrected] and other disciplines at various fictional institutions, the author addresses contemporary issues such as slaves and slavery, the abolitionist movement, African American suffrage and civil rights, the purchase of Alaska, Southern amnesty, education, and the Reconstruction period in general. Public figures mentioned include Jefferson Davis, Andrew Johnson, Horace Greeley, and William Seward.
Note: Writing under the pen name Petroleum V. Nasby, U.S. humorist David Ross Locke had a considerable influence on public issues during and after the U.S. Civil War. He was an ardent Unionist and foe of slavery who published barbed satiric attacks on the Southern position.
