Encyclopedia articles, written by subject authorities, provide information useful for
gaining a basic understanding of a topic and getting started with a research project.
Typically, a bibliography, or list, of "classic" books and articles for further
research follows each article. Advanced students will find them useful for filling gaps
and covering topics related to their central area of investigation.

Indexes and abstracts give a researcher access to articles on specific subjects that have appeared in a variety of periodicals. Scholarly indexes may cover a broad area of study the way Social Science Index does or focus much more specifically, the way Black Studies on Disc does. Most journal articles listed are written by scholars and aimed at other researchers in that field, making them particularly important research sources. An index gives the bibliographic citation needed to identify and locate a specific work on a topic: author, title of article, journal title, volume and issue number, date, and pages. An abstract is a brief summary of an article's contents.
First identify the article you want to see, and then check the Serial Catalog to determine whether the library owns that periodical. Schaffer Library holdings information is displayed for each periodical indexed by the WILSONDISC CD-ROM system.

The area around Schenectady is exceptionally rich in library resources, and cooperation among libraries is generally excellent. Although our collection is a strong one for a college our size, please keep in mind that the materials we provide for you within the walls of Schaffer Library represent only a part of the total resources available to you. If there is any book or journal article that you would like to use, but the library doesn't own it or it is missing from the collection, Interlibrary Loan will attempt to obtain a copy for you.
Most requests can be filled within a few working days, and all you have to do is complete an ILL request card at the Reference Desk or submit your request electronically from the Library Home Page.
Look at Where, What, Who and How Long Will It Take? of Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (ILL/DD), available from the Library Home Page, for more information on how to use the ILL service (including how to request materials electronically) and on the fee-based UnCover table of contents and document delivery service.
You may charge out materials (except issues of periodicals) from other libraries in the Capital District Library Council (CDLC) network with a CDLC Direct Access Borrower's Card, which you can get at the Schaffer Library Circulation Desk.
Use the CaDiLaC CD-ROM to find the locations of books and serials owned by CDLC libraries.
Normally, books circulate for four weeks. Seniors who are working on their theses, however, may elect to charge out books on their thesis topics for the duration of their research projects. Thesis loan contracts, which must be co-signed by your adviser, are available at the Circulation Desk, and to avoid problems with overdue notices and fines, please make it clear at the outset that you are requesting a "thesis loan," whenever you charge out materials.
Books checked out on thesis loan are still subject to recall if others need them, and the thesis loan privilege cannot under any circumstances be extended to include books obtained from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan.
