There is an HP Scanjet scanner available in the lobby of the Schaffer Library directly
across from the Reference Desk. The scanner is especially useful for creating color
images from materials that cannot be checked out of the library. Images can be saved to a memory stick or sent to an e-mail address.
(Recommended Procedure)
- Place item to be scanned on flatbed; arrow indicates which corner to align with.
- Click on the "Scanner-Start Here" icon
on the computer’s "desktop" to launch the scanning application.
- Choose "Scan Document" option, which prompts "What Are You Scanning?"
screen.
- Choose "Document" or "Picture".
- Below but on same screen is "Where Do You Want to Send the Scanned
Images?" For either saving to a memory stick or for emailing out, click on "Save to
file Save Options" button.
- After clicking above button (in Step 5), choose "file type". For
pictures, .jpg, and for documents, .gif or .pdf will provide the best quality image while creating a smaller
file.
- Assign your own choice of file name ("scan" is the default).
- If saving to a memory stick (insert stick first) change "save location" to the E: drive.
If emailing the scanned file out, leave "save location" at desk-top (default).
- Click "OK", click "Scan", click "OK" in the next succession of prompts.
After a brief pause, the scanning itself will begin.
- If document is more than one page, load next page and click "scan".
Some format choices combine these into one file, and some create separate files.
- You can then minimize the scanning window, check your memory stick for the
scanned document or picture or if emailing, send it as an attachment found
on the "desktop". Note: attachments with file sizes above 2 MB will be
refused for transmission by Union's email.
