Encyclopedias, Handbooks, Specialized Dictionaries, and Directories

Encyclopedia articles, written by subject authorities, provide information useful for gaining a basic understanding of a topic and getting started with a research project. Typically, a bibliography, or list, of "classic" books and articles for further research follows each article. Students will find also these encyclopedias useful for brushing up on topics related to their central area of investigation. [Note: See the Research by Subject for sources that deal with broader areas within the discipline.]

American Statistical Association. Statistics in Sport
Provides links to a range of resources relating to statistics in sport.

Statistical Universe
The library subscribes to the Congressional Information Service Microfiche Library. Every document indexed in American Statistics Index (ASI) since 1979 is available in this library. In addition to the ASI Microfiche Library for federal government publications containing statistical data, the library also subscribes to the Index to International Statistics (IIS) and Statistical Reference Index (SRI) Microfiche Libraries, containing most but not every item indexed in those two sources. The online service allows users to search summaries of statistical publications, then link to the full-text of selected publications on Statistical Universe and government Web sites. Includes access to Index to International Statistics (IIS)

Subject Search

Try the following terms:

Library Materials > Finding Primary Source Materials in Schaffer Library
Schaffer Library's Books:

Library Web Catalog. Click here to reach the Library's computer catalog.  Searching examples are given at each "portal", e.g., author, title, subject, and keyword.

Keyword Search examples:

A hint--When you find a relevant book listing, look at the subject list attached to the record for that book.  You can click on any of those subjects listed and branch out.  It's a rich and powerful search technique, but you can get off your original path very quickly.  We suggest you jot down good subject headings (and keyword combinations) so you can get back to them later.

Book locations: Click on the blue hyperlinked word beneath the brown box "Where Is It?", and a map showing the book's location by floor and specific area will pop up.

Other Libraries' Catalogs (two choices):

Other individual libraries' catalogs -- Follow this link (through the Schaffer Library home page) into the catalogs of some Capital District libraries as well as into those of major research universities.

CaDiLaC Online -- This link leads to the online union catalog of many of the libraries of the Capital District.  Because it is "live", some listings display whether books are currently on the shelf or charged out.  Periodical title holdings information is also available.  Log-in as "guest".
