    Encyclopedias
    Encyclopedia articles, written by subject authorities, provide information useful for gaining a basic understanding of a topic and getting started with a research project. Typically, a bibliography, or list, of "classic" books and articles for further research follows each article. Students will find also these encyclopedias useful for brushing up on topics related to their central area of investigation. [Note: See the Research Guides for sources that deal with narrower sub-fields within the discipline.]

    Countries and Their Cultures.  Edited by Melvin Ember and Carol R. Ember.  New York: Macmillan Reference USA, 2001.

    This resource serves as a guide to cultural beliefs and practices worldwide.  Each entry describes the culture of a specific country, including what is universal in that region, and what varies from group to group.  Also addressed are topics of etiquette in each country, as well ethnic relations issues.  Illustrated, with bibliographies.

    Arranged alphabetically this five-volume set presents some 1000 entries on topics from all the major subfields of anthropology: physical/biological anthropology, archaeology, cultural/social anthropology, linquistics, and applied anthropology. Other major themes covered by editor Birx (anthropology, Canisius College) and the contributors include biography, evolution, geology, paleontology, philosophy, psychology, religion/theology, sociology, and research/theoretical frameworks. Many of the entries provide biographical accounts of influential researchers and theorists.

    Each volume of this six-volume encyclopedia has as its focus the traditions of the known cultures, past and present, of a country, region, or continent.   Entry categories include major traditions, regional subtraditions and specific geographical site information.  Includes reference bibliographies and suggested reading lists.

    Ordered by geographical region, the ten volumes of Encyclopedia of World Cultures present characteristics of world cultural groups for use by students, educators, researchers and travelers.  Summaries "provide a mix of demographic, historical, social, economic, political, and religious information" for each culture.   Includes filmographies by volume and brief bibliographies.

    Covering almost 300 sports and related activities, Encyclopedia of World Sport discusses the role of these activities in world culture.  Entries are scholarly discussions of the historical and social development, practice, and impact of individual sports.  Illustrated, with brief bibliographies.

Please be aware that these bibliographies must be used in conjunction with Schaffer Library's online catalog (to look up any books listed) and with our list of Schaffer Library's Serial Titles (to determine whether any articles listed are held here in any format).

    This title is Schaffer Library's principal subscription to an on-going and updated bibliography of articles and books in anthropology.

    Handbooks collect basic, practical information—formulas, tables of data, classification systems, definitions—for professionals operating within a discipline.

    This resources attempts a brief overview of the various kinds of Internet resources available, with major emphasis on an alphabetical listing of specific anthropology-related sites, discussion lists, and the like. Includes tips for searching the Internet, creating web resources, and using other Internet-related technologies.

    Need more? ... The library subscribes to the "statistical" component of Lexis-Nexis, and that resource gives Union users access online to three large databases of data: the American Statistics Index, the Statistical Reference Index, and the Index to International Statistics. These contain, respectively, data of the U.S. federal government, of states and commercial bodies, and of international organizations. 

    Much--not all--of what Lexis-Nexis cites is available in full text online.  For the rest, Schaffer Library also subscribes to microfiche copies of all the statistics cited in the above (with certain exceptions).

    Assistance with data retrieval is available at the Library's Reference Desk.
