    Encyclopedias
    Encyclopedia articles, written by subject authorities, provide information useful for gaining a basic understanding of a topic and getting started with a research project. Typically, a bibliography, or list, of "classic" books and articles for further research follows each article. Students will find also these encyclopedias useful for brushing up on topics related to their central area of investigation. [Note: See the Research Guides for sources that deal with narrower sub-fields within the discipline.]

    Countries and Their Cultures.  Edited by Melvin Ember and Carol R. Ember.  New York: Macmillan Reference USA, 2001.

    This resource serves as a guide to cultural beliefs and practices worldwide.  Each entry describes the culture of a specific country, including what is universal in that region, and what varies from group to group.  Also addressed are topics of etiquette in each country, as well ethnic relations issues.  Illustrated, with bibliographies.

    Encyclopedia of World Cultures. Edited by Timothy J. O'Leary and David Levinson.  Boston: G.K. Hall, 1991-.

    Ordered by geographical region, the ten volumes of Encyclopedia of World Cultures present characteristics of world cultural groups for use by students, educators, researchers and travelers.  Summaries "provide a mix of demographic, historical, social, economic, political, and religious information" for each culture.   Includes filmographies by volume and brief bibliographies.

    Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America. Contributing editor, Rudolph J. Vecoli; edited by Judy Galens, Anna Sheets, Robyn V. Young. Detroit, MI : Gale Research, 2000.

    A two-volume set containing signed articles on over 100 distinct ethnic, ethnoreligious, and Native American groups in the U.S from the Acadians to the Yupiat. documenting thousands of artists, records labels, and musical genres. Entries run from 5,000 to over 20,000 words, and each one offers an overview on the group plus information on assimilation and acculturation, language, family and community dynamics, religion, employment and economic traditions, politics and government, and individual and group contributions to academics, literature, sports, and other fields. Directory information includes media outlets for the group (print, television, and radio), organizations and associations, museums and research centers, and references for further reading.

    Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups. Stephan Thernstrom, editor; Ann Orlov, managing editor, Oscar Handlin, consulting editor. Cambridge, Mass.: Belknap Press, 1980.

    Articles on the various ethnic groups generally run 3,000 to 15,000 words and include selective bibliographies. There are additional entries for definitions of important terms and concepts as well as thematic essays on policy issues or such subjects as education, religion, and literature.

    Compiles more than 230 noteworthy and compelling speeches delivered by over 130 prominent African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans from the late 1700s through early 1995.

    Entries for each country include information of geography and climate, the environment, population, ethnic groups, religions, transportation system, history, government and politics, the military, international relations, trade and economics, income, agriculture and industry, science and technology, social development, health, housing, education, culture, and tourism, with a short bibliography for further reading. Volume 1 is devoted to the United Nations, while the other four volumes cover Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, and Europe.

    Subject Dictionaries

    An annual publication and reference collection staple since 1926, The Europa World Year Book offers a listing of international and regional organizations, and lengthy surveys of all countries of the world. Each country article includes historical facts and current political, economic and social demographics.

    "The politics, cultures and economies of the world" are the foci of this well-established reference tool.  It serves as a quick reference guide to current demographics of nations, states, provinces, and territories worldwide.  It also provides brief descriptions of a host of international organizations.

    The World Factbook is a gazetteer of country profiles compiled and updated by the Central Intelligence Agency.  Also available to Schaffer Library users via the Reference component of LexisNexis Academic Universe.

    Sources of Statistics


    The library subscribes to the ASI Microfiche Library. Every document indexed in ASI since 1979 is available in this library. In addition to the ASI Microfiche Library for federal government publications containing statistical data, the library also subscribes to the SRI Microfiche Library, containing most but not every non-federal statistical item indexed in SRI. A third collection, Index to International Statistics, deals with statistical material from international, intergovernmental bodies, completes the package. Online access to the database—and to some of the documents themselves—is available through the Statistical Universe component of LexisNexis Academic Universe.

For faculty, the Research Guides provide structured access to the Library and Internet resources relevant to their own work or in advising students on their research projects. Both offer basic search options including and, or, not and Title begins with, Title contains, etc.  You can also select a subject category to browse such as Social and Behavioral Sciences or Gender and Ethnic Studies. Ask at the Reference Desk for assistance with local holdings.

    Two services included in the Databases & Indexes section, JSTOR and Project Muse, offer full-text access to journals by discipline. Users can search or browse by category/subject. JSTOR - Anthropology. Project Muse includes Anthropology, Culture & Society, and Folklore.
