Visiting Shanghai Museum

Virginia Liu:

Our university is beautiful, unique, with the presence of the old buildings standing next to the new ones. It gives a unique sparkle to the atmosphere which makes learning Chinese seem more meaningful. It is quite interesting to see so many other foreign students from all over the world. People here are very nice and helpful too. Before I came here, I never thought my room would look so nice either, we have our own TV set, air conditioner and bathroom. Everyday someone comes in to clean our room. It is pretty nice, and the stuff is very cheap.

Buying bikes

Brandon Soloski: China is great! The people are friendly and their culture is fascinating. Everything intrigues me: the tastes of their food, their habits, and their architecture. The Chinese language I find to be very difficult. However, successfully communicating is very rewarding. I look forward to spending more time and seeing more of this country. Hopefully I will pick up the language and make more friends.

Entrance to the temple

Tanu Chandra: It took me at least two days to really accept the fact I was in China… Being a vegetarian was not as difficult as I thought it would be. There are plenty of vegetarian dishes, just a matter of asking for it. Shopping was unique. It is very difficult at first because we were getting ripped off left and right, but you practice your bargaining skills. Crossing the street is always adventurous… At least there are timers near the traffic lights to let you know how many more seconds you have before you get hit.

In the classroom

Sarah Peach: When I first arrived in China I did not ever feel as though I had really arrived. Shanghai is so modern that you don’t feel as though you ever left the U.S. After a week in Nanjing the major differences are much more noticeable. . At first things seemed so cheap but after you have been here for a few days you feel spending 50 cents for a bottle of water seems outrageous. One of the funniest experiences was seeing most of the Union students ride their new bikes home through the streets. I am sure there will be more exciting and hilarious experiences to come.
