Learning Chinese

Alec
I began studying Chinese one year ago at Union, for an unknown reason; I just simply wanted to learn a different language. The writing system also seemed very interesting, so I figured why not learn it. I had no clue though how difficult it could be. Now after a year I’m proud to have made it far enough with the language that I can bargain with people on the street, etc. But I still have my discouraging moments. I remember getting out of class at Union after a horrible Chinese class and being so incredibly discouraged; then again these were those days few and far between when I was on the ball and I’d be on top of the world after class. Like any language Chinese takes a lot of effort to learn, but be prepared to handle a language without an alphabet, and, for me, inaudible tones.

I have realized that the best method of studying is to just practice speaking with local Chinese. I think that’s the only way I have improved. Of course the classes help, but definitely just getting outside the school gates and speaking is the most efficient way to learn Chinese well. The Chinese friends I have made are always willing to correct me to make sure I am saying the words correctly.
