The Union College Miniterm in Martinique took place from November 25 to December 15, 2001, and 15 Union College students participated. The miniterm was preceded by a 10-week course taught in French. Students lived with Martinican host families for the duration of the stay, participated in a wide range of seminars and French language classes, and went on three major excursions, one to the north of the island, one to the south, and a final exciting jeep tour. They also participated in a guided tour of Fort-de-France, a visit to the Archeological Museum of Martinique, a dance workshop, a visit to the Conseil Régional de Martinique, the Ballets Folkloriques, and a "Contes créoles" storytelling evening. And of course, there was a little time for enjoying Martinique's beautiful beaches! Students also created independent projects in which they incorporated seminar notes, excursion lectures, and individual interviews between students and people of Martinique, all of which were supplemented with photos and extensive commentary (all in French). A number of these projects were presented at the Steinmetz Symposium Spring Term 2002. Click here for a detailed calendar with photos of the Martinique miniterm seminars and events.
