There are only six students and a teaching assistant living in the house, but for our small size, we are a very diverse group. We are from Germany, the United States, and Japan and our areas of study range from German to computer science and from political science to biology and psychology. In order to provide a better idea of who lives in the house and why we live there, we all wrote paragraphs about ourselves and our opinions of the house:

Hello! My name is Allison Sturma and I live in the German House, otherwise known as Language House B. I come from western Massachussetts, and I am at Union to study political science as a major and German as a minor. I have study German for two years at Union, including spend a fantastic term in Freiburg, Germany. I think that the language houses offer a unique opportunity to interact with other students in a foreign language. They are a great way to improve your speaking and listening skills, if you embrace the opportunity.

Chris Sponsler

I'm Chris, a hick from western New York, and I'm a senior with a German Major and a Minor in Philosophy. I spent a good portion of my college career living all over Germany. Living in the German House is a great way for me to keep in touch with other "Germanites" on campus, profs and TAs, as well as help to promote awareness and enthusiasm for the theme of the house. Did I mention it's a cozy house? I mostly enjoy the cool people in the house, the atmosphere, the events, the hardwood floors. . .

Dagmar van Ackeren

Guten Tach zusammen! I am Dagmar - yes, Dagmar - and that is not dogma and not Dharma! This name doesn't sound as funny in Germany - and this is where I am from. I'm this year's teaching assistant, that means I do the language lab sessions with the German students and help organize cultural events together with the Germanhousians and the German Club. Back in my home country I am a student of cultural studies - that is theater, music, cultural management and political science. Coming to the US is a great opportunity for me to experience cultural similarities and differences first hand. That's sometimes challenging but always fun. Come to our events and see yourself!

Rika Ando

I am Rika Ando. I am a senior Bio/Psychology major. I have taken two-terms of basic German last year. I really enhoyed the language, and I am also very intersted in learning the German Culture, which is why I decided to live in this house again this year. Living in the German house has given me an opportunity to practice German and also to be exposed to its culture. I learned a lot about the culture thru the events such as Oktoberfest, the fairy tale night, movie nights, and so on. It is fun being engaged in those events with other house members as well. We also interact with the Spanish/French house and a lot of international students each year. I think that the language house is the best place to get to know other cultures on this small campus!!

Dan Agar

Guten Tag! My name is Dan and I am a senior Computer Science major (if your geek alerts are going off it's for good reason!). I took Basic German in my junior year and decided that I wanted to take the opportunity to live in the house and become more exposed to the German language and culture. It's been a positive experience and I encourage anyone else interested in learning more about German culture to consider living in the house- plus it's a much nicer place to live in than North!

Shahna Cohen

My name is Shahna Cohen and I am a senior majoring in Classics. I am of English, Irish, Italian, Polish, and Romanian descent. So as you can see... you do not have to be German or a German Language major to want to live in the house. After taking a couple of German classes at Union I decided to live in the language house so that I could meet new people and take a more active part in learning about the German culture. It is a great place to live! You work together with the people in the house to put together social and cultural events. It is a wonderful alternative to the Residence Halls. Stop by and visit us sometime. Auf Wiedersehen!
