Many extracurricular
activities are held at Union College to encourage Japanese language
students to use what they have learned in realistic, practical, and
fun situations!
Weekly Japanese Lunch Table
This is a great opportunity for students to use Japanese in a more casual
and relaxed atmosphere. Japanese native speakers on campus attend this
lunch table and they can teach what is not taught in class.
Movie Nights
Japanese movies (with English subtitles) are often shown on campus (normally
at Thurston House). This is a wonderful chance to learn Japanese language
and culture in a non-classroom context. Both animated and non-animated
movies are shown. Students' requests are welcome.
Japanese Food Night
This is an event to learn Japanese culture through food. Meanings of
the names of traditional food are explained, followed by tasting!
Japanese Performance Night
This event is promoted with a belief that language learning doesn't
just happen in the classroom. Students of all levels in the Japanese
program demonstrate how much they have learned and achieved during each
term by presenting their skits, dramas, songs, and speeches in Japanese.
Prizes are awarded for the best performances, and food and refreshments
are provided at the reception after the performance.
There are a number of other Japanese cultural activities, such as Origami
Night, visits to restaurants, and calligraphy practice throughout the
academic year at Union so you will have many opportunities to learn
about Japanese culture as well as practice your language skills.
